Amadou Ly Talks French Coven In Breaking Dawn Part 2

Amadou Ly attends THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN - PART 1 premiere

Amadou Ly attends THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN - PART 1 premiere

Lori had the chance to talk with Amadou Ly in a phone interview about a week ago. After she introduced herself, she  explained that she was part of the interview team (Twilight Series Theories, Twilight Examiner, and Twilight Facebook) that got him and Janelle Froehlich to talk about a few things that were maybe a bit of a secret still. You can watch the video of this interview as well as the one we did with Melissa Rosenberg for more information about the French Coven.

Twilight Lexicon: Let me tell you what happened. We had heard about the French coven and I hadn’t really put a lot of thought into it. Then when I saw you, it clicked in my mind that you have a striking resemblance to Edi Gathegi. That’s where the whole conversation came from. Have you met Edi Gathegi?

Amadou: Yes, I met him that night at the premiere actually. He was a really nice guy and I told him how much I admire his work.

Twilight Lexicon: The interview we did with you – and when we spoke to Melissa Rosenberg she mentioned some stuff about the French coven – I have to tell you that it has been stirring up quite a bit of conversation in the fandom. How does that make you feel?

Amadou: When the made the announcement of the new French coven, it little went from like zero to sky rocket. Then three days later you have the Spectrum stating that I’m one of the French vampires to watch out for. It’s definitely a great feeling and I’m really grateful to see the positive reaction so far. And I really think [fans] are going to love it – they’re going to love the French vampires simply because there’s going to be something new for the fans to see. And we’re also speaking French in the film.

Twilight Lexicon: How much of your dialogue is in French?

Amadou: I don’t know. You might have to wait and see!

Twilight Lexicon: There are a few fans who have commented on our website who are worried that by adding a coven we are going to lose some parts that were in the book originally. How would you respond to them?

Amadou: Melissa Rosenberg and Stephenie Meyer actually added a bonus coven for the fans. I think once [the fans] give it a chance and take a look at what’s being revealed by adding the new French coven, I think they’ll totally be happy with the addition of the new coven. So far what I’ve read has been positive and I’m glad [fans] are embracing it the way they are at the moment.

Twilight Lexicon: Your personal story is so unique and you’ve been sharing touches of your own personal story in various interviews. You’re from Senegal.

Amadou: Yes.

Twilight Lexicon: When did you first come to the United States?

Amadou: I came to the US on Sept. 10, 2001.

Twilight Lexicon: And then you became a student in search of a visa.

Amadou: I was undocumented for a few years and then I received my F1 visa and my green card.

Twilight Lexicon: But yet through all of your struggles you’ve ended up in this major franchise kind of living a dream life!

Amadou: Totally! From being in Senegal to overcoming all those obstacles that were in my way and then growing up in Harlem and living on my own since I was 14 then dealing with immigration at 18 to the point where I was pretty close to being deported – yes! At the moment I can happily say I am totally living a dream life!

Twilight Lexicon: Do you see yourself as a source of inspiration to young people? I mean, so many kids now a days are giving up way too soon on life and their dreams. What kind of advice would you give to them about not giving up?

Amadou: When I was a kid growing up in Harlem I was circled by a lot of negativity. I learned a lot of great things, but the truth is, I was circled by a lot of negativity whether it was gang members or drug dealers or killers. Therefore, what I did was I found voices that spoke to me or spoke to my soul. Those voices were from Sydney Poitier or Oprah Winfrey, and at the same time reading different type of books from The Alchemist to Tuesday’s with Morrie to make me appreciate life more and understand that there is going to be struggle in life, struggles are here to be overcame. Once I learned that there’s going to be struggles everywhere you go, it just made things easier. As a matter of fact, it made me become more excited for more struggles. I don’t know if that sounds right to you?

Twilight Lexicon: That sounds exactly right. That you’re excited to see what you can learn and how you can grow in the future.

Amadou: Exactly. Throughout the years I’ve developed a mechanism where we can’t let the small things bother you, but at the same time, we’re all human. We still go through struggles every day.

Twilight Lexicon: You said in one of the interviews that I read that Effie in Dreamgirls was one of your personal inspirations.

Amadou: Totally. I remember in 2006 when I was watching Dreamgirls. Looking at the character Effie and how much she wanted to pursue her dreams yet there’s this huge speed bump. Just looking at everything that she had to go through. Literally it told me to keep going and that it is more than possible. So watching Bill Condon direct in that film and then having the opportunity to work with Bill Condon in Twilight at this stage – it’s a dream that came true!

Twilight Lexicon: Almost like a full circle moment.

Amadou: Yes. Totally. I even told them this at the premiere. I’ve been living a dream and I think some of the people just question how much I smile or how I laugh a lot. It’s because I’m living a dream! They have no idea!

Twilight Lexicon: You do! You smile from ear to ear. When people were asking me about what was memorable [from the premiere], I mentioned you and how huge your smile was.

Amadou: Thank you! I believe in positivity. I believe in great energy. And I believe that we are all one. Therefore, do your part and smile and you never know – that smile may make someone else’s day.

Twilight Lexicon: We always ask in interviews if you have any upcoming projects that they want the fandom to know about because – as I hope you will learn about the Twilight fandom is that we like to follow actors in other things that they do! SO what upcoming projects do you have?

Amadou: I’m working with director Jessica Goldberg on a project where I’m playing an immigrant whose story is pretty close to my personal life story. So you should totally look out for that. But at the moment we are in the early stages. I’m also writing a pilot that I’m working on and I think that’s going to be amazing. [Fans] can follow my on twitter @AmadouLy where I will keep them updated on every single thing that I’m working on. So far the fans have been lovely and very supportive. I’ve very grateful to have their presence.

Twilight Lexicon: Is there anything else you’d like to say to the fans?

Amadou: Thank you for making Breaking Dawn Part 1 number one in the world. (Note: At the time of the interview, the film was in I’s 2nd week at number 1.) It is mind blowing how they have supported Breaking Dawn 1. However, Breaking Dawn 2 is coming! It is the final. It will make you laugh. It will make you cry. It will make you scared. After all, it is the end of Twilight and Twilight is a generation. You will have to go and watch Breaking Dawn 2, because generations will go by and everyone will look back and they’ll talk about Breaking Dawn 2.

Twilight Lexicon They’ll say, “Where were you when?”

Amadou: Exactly! Everyone will look back and say, “Do you remember this scene? Do you remember the fight scene? Do you remember other scenes?” And trust me, you will want to remember it because you will want to remember the momentum and the energy. Bill Condon did such an amazing job. And you have the new French coven to watch out for! And there’s a lot of other surprises! Who knows – there might be a twist coming around your way!

Twilight Lexicon: Well, we are excited for it! Thank you so much for talking with me.

Amadou: Thank you so much. I enjoyed this, and I also enjoyed the other one! (Meaning the red carpet interview.)

What do you think about the new coven being added to Part 2? Certainly, it will serve some fresh material and a few surprises for us all! The fact that Melissa Rosenberg and Stephenie Meyer worked to make these characters certainly speaks to the creative authority involved in creating these roles, right? Any other thoughts?

*Best Twilight Cast Moments in 2011*

Each December, it’s fun to look back at some of the year’s most memorable moments in Twilight. Then, around New Year’s, we can start to look forward to what’s to come for Twilight fans.

This year, there were plenty of things worth remembering about the Twilight Saga and the personalities involved, so here’s a look back at the eleven most stand-out aspects of 2011 in the world of Twilight.

As with every year the big three were seen on many a magazine cover this year, but it was Kristen Stewart, particularly, who tore it up this year, hitting the covers of VogueWGlamourGlamour UK, and more. The one which really seemed to stand out, for Kristen Stewart fans and the world at large, was her GQ UKcover. Wowza!

She also appeared in the music video for Marcus Foster’s “I Was Broken,” at the MET Gala with the designers from Proenza Schouler, and at Glamour‘s Women of the Year Awards. Not to mention, she was a part of the many, many promotional appearances discussed below, and she’s been filming a big new action movie to boot.

The year started out really well in the Awards Show department for Twilight, with the cast flying in from the set of Breaking Dawn to collect some People’s Choice Awards and say hello to us all after a long drought without seeing them. Then, in February, we all felt a little duped by the supposed “Oscars surprise” which fell pretty short of the producers’ promise. All was well, though, since the Twilight Saga escaped virtually unscathed by the Razzie Awards once again, and once the summer began to roll around, it was MTV Movie Awards time . . . which is always a good time for Twilight fans. The cast cleaned up, and the first trailer for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 was released. The Teen Choice Awards also recognized Twilight with five awards for the cast, but the big event, as usual, was the Movie Awards, with People’s Choice coming in a close second (if for no other reason than a memory of Queen Latifah embarrassing the mess out of Taylor Lautner).

There were some great new projects involving the Twilight cast to make a splash this year. Robert Pattinson’s Water For Elephants hit theaters in the spring, and he filmed Cosmopolis this summer. Taylor Lautner’s Abduction came along in the fall, and he’s been attached to a new Gus Van Sant indie. Meanwhile, Kristen Stewart picked up a great new gig as “Snow White” for Snow White And The Huntsman, and the first trailer for that film blew us all away. Anna Kendrick teamed up with Eclipse star Bryce Dallas Howard for the buzzy fall film 50/50, and Jamie Campbell Bower and Eclipse star Xavier Samuel were inAnonymous. Howard also portrayed the witchy “Hilly Holbrook” in the successful film translation of The Help, and Bower was picked for the ultra-coveted leading male role in The Mortal Instruments. Finally, Jackson Rathbone’s Girlfriend movie, which prides itself on pioneering the industry with the first leading actor to have Down Syndrome, picked up some speed after winning the Gotham Audience Award.

One big achievement for the Twilight Saga‘s leading trio was being immortalized at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Los Angeles. They join an elite few who’ve received this honor, and they’ve thusly become a part of Hollywood history forever. In their various TV appearances surrounding the event, it was clear that they had a hard time believing the fortune of that honor themselves.

Twilight Humor

You’ve gotta love it when the Twilight cast participates in a funny or two. This year, there were many. Both Michael Sheen and Elizabeth Reaser did hilariously dramatic readings of Twilight fanfiction, for starters. Whoever thought of getting them to do that was sheer genius. Then, Taylor Lautner did a Funny Or Die sketch on the woes of football fans fearing the perpetual lock out earlier this year. Finally, Peter Facinelli and Nikki Reed teamed up for a ”Wondertwins” sketch series that had us simultaneously laughing and cringing.

As with every year, there were tons of Twilight cast appearances in 2011, be they international press tour stops, Comic-Con panels (where some of the cast, by the way, came out to serve breakfast to fans who camped out for the event), the Twilight convention stop in L.A., awards shows, or the Breaking Dawn premieres themselves. It’s always nice to see their smiling faces, right?

With Breaking Dawn, Stephenie Meyer accomplished a first – working as a film producer. It wasn’t her only turn doing that this year, though, as she worked on Austenland, the book-to-film adaptation of her friend Shannon Hale’s novel of the same name. She also appeared on-screen, again, in Breaking Dawn, and the film adaptation of her sci-fi novel The Host gained a few new castmates thanks in part to her work in promoting the film at Cannes. Needless to say, she’s not just the Twilight Saga‘s author anymore. Stephenie Meyer’s gone Hollywood!

Between the release of Robert Pattinson’s “Songs from a Room,” Jackson Rathbone taking his 100 Monkeys across the globe, Billy Burke releasing his second music video, and, of course, Breaking Dawn – Part 1‘s soundtrack fitting so nicely with the film, 2011 was another big year in Twilight-related music.

Twilight stars and filmmakers support eachother

One nice thing about the relationships developed within the Twilight Saga is the support they’ve shown eachother when given the opportunity. First, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner showed up to support the premiere of New Moon director Chris Weitz’s A Better Life this summer, and Weitz reciprocated by turning up for Taylor Lautner’s Abduction premiere in the fall. Weitz wasn’t the only one to come along for that – director Bill Condon and co-star Booboo Stewart were there as well. Ashley Greene also had some Breaking Dawn co-star support from Julia Jones and Casey LaBow at the premiere for her filmSkateland.

Of course, inarguably the biggest event of 2011 in Twilight-land was the production and release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1. Just over a year ago, the filming process began on it, and already it’s here and tearing up the box office. We all watched as glimpses trickled in from here and there during production, but most of the surprises and best moments of the movie were saved for the big screen. Fan reactions to this installment were overwhelmingly positive, and we were all left thirsty for the final film, which debuts next November 16, 2012.

Fun Interview with Taylor…..

Taylor

Taylor

Interview at Beverly Hills hotel—-Post media news/ Vancouver Sun

As usual, the always affable Lautner bubbles with enthusiasm during an interview at a Beverly Hills hotel just before the release of Part 1.

Q: What music are you listening to?

A: This one actually stresses me out. I am so all over the place with my music tastes that it is ridiculous.

Q: How so?

A: I’ll find myself listening to weird things like hardcore techno music, and then I’ll be listening to mainstream hip-hop. I’m so crazy with my music tastes. I’ll listen to a song, I’ll become obsessed with it, and then I’m onto the next one.

Q: Okay, so what’s up with Jacob in Breaking Dawn – Part I?

A: I was really excited about this one because, I mean, Jacob becomes a man, and he has to make a lot of decisions. He’s torn between his two families.

Q: What was it like working with director Bill Condon for the first time?

A: I trusted him completely. It was really special, and now seeing the movie, I’m really happy. . . . It’s just very exciting to see (Jacob) in a completely different light than before.

Q: And then there is the imprinting scene with Bella’s baby, Renesmee. What’s that about?

A: That was tough because what is imprinting? What do you look like when you imprint? Those were all the questions going through my head. Luckily, we had Stephenie (Meyer) on set the entire time, and trust me, I asked her a million times.

Q: As the Twilight series comes to a close, what won’t you miss?

A: Not wearing clothes. I love Vancouver, but we always have to film when it’s cold and rainy and gross. The sun comes out and we have to stop filming.

Q: Other than that, has the Twilight fame been all positive for you?

A: I honestly can’t even think of complaints or anything that I wouldn’t want to do because of everything that it has given me. It’s just absolutely unreal, and I didn’t see it coming at all. None of us did.

Q: Has the bond with Pattinson and Stewart been helpful?

A: It’s really unbelievable how much we’ve all gotten along. I can’t imagine filming this franchise if we didn’t. It would be a complete nightmare if we didn’t.

Q: Twi-hards are obsessively devoted. What has been your craziest encounter?

A: The craziest fan encounter? It’s tough to choose just one, and I don’t like using the word crazy. I like using the word passionate.

Q: What was your most passionate encounter?

A: I’ve had a few girls that tattooed a picture of my signature to their arm. I mean that blows my mind. Something new happens every single day and it continues to blow my mind.

Q: Will you take a part of Jacob with you into your future?

A: Absolutely. After playing the same character for five movies and four years, you grow so close to him. You start putting yourself into Jacob, and you start putting Jacob into you.

Q: So you still like him?

A: I love Jacob. There are many things that I look up to Jacob for. Jacob is one of the most loyal people, one of the most persistent people. He has amazing qualities. I hope that I can learn from him.

Q: Do you feel a need to continue your momentum by making lots of films after Twilight?

A: It’s definitely not just a matter of finding something that keeps your face out there. I mean, I want everything to feel special to me, and I’m very specific about that.

Q: Are you concerned about being typecast?

A: We’ve all said this to each other because we all deal with it. It would almost be a compliment to be typecast because that’s our jobs.

The 19-year-old Lautner continues to be reliable and sensible as The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 unfolds in a very dramatic way at the box office.

The first part of Breaking Dawn (based on Stephenie Myer’s book) has raked in more than $489 million U. S. worldwide after two weeks in theatres. Part 2, already filmed and set for release in November of 2012, is on track to do even better.

So far, Lautner seems to be taking the celebrated success of the franchise in stride, even as he makes the transition into adulthood and a career without Twilight.
