You may remember the contest we had a while back for a great book called “Becoming Edward.”  It was written by author Faye Meredith and we had a great response to that contest.  The book is fabulous so if you didn’t win and have yet to read it, please pick it up at Amazon.  You can get the paperback or Kindle version HERE.

Every now and then, when you read Indie books, you find a treasure. This is one of them. I loved it.

And incidentally, I noticed another review that criticised it for British spelling and expressions. But if those of us who are accustomed to British spelling have to put up with American spelling, it should work the same way. Stars should NOT be taken off because the reader can’t cope with a few minor differences.

I don’t know this author, and I cannot remember how it wound up on my Kindle. But I am pleased that it did.

Apart from dangerous dogs on studded leads, Tanya’s never seen a wild animal before. She gets obsessed with the whale and blags her way onto the muddy bank where it’s stuck. Before long she’s volunteering to drench it in buckets of water. Meanwhile, Lena’s new lifestyle puts her in terrible danger and Tanya has to decide whether to save the whale or her friend.

Most unusual book that would not be a natural read for me. But how wrong I was. This is a gritty uplifting tale that swings between tough urban life and the good side of human nature . The contrasts are severe but the balance is right and I would recommend this as an original read

I’ll be honest, I’m not really digging these photos but hopefully they’ll make more sense after I have seen this movie I can’t wait to see.  Robert Pattinson is a beautiful man but I don’t see it here. It’s a kin to what they did to Peter Facinelli in Breaking Dawn.  That still makes me giggle.

This is Darina’s final post from her trip to Forks and beyond!  With new friends leaving for Forks just this morning, it’s perfect timing!  Thanks Darina for letting us follow you around on your fun trip!  For those that have never been, and for those of us who have, it was fun to go along!

April 22nd – Leaving Forks…Tear

This was it. We woke up & had to get ready to leave Forks. The plan was to take the Bainbridge Ferry into Seattle where we would visit Pike Place Market, the very first Starbucks and the Space Needle. So we loaded up the rental car, checked out of the Forks Motel and headed right next door to the Forks Coffee Shop to get some grub. The food was good and very cheap. I had to hit up the post office to mail out some crap that was most likely going to put our suitcases over the Delta 50 pound limit. Basically it was just our heavy rain boots and a couple of other small items. We then stopped at probably the only ATM in town at Bank of America. It was a beautiful sunny day and the drive to the ferry was awesome. I got a little nervous about taking the ferry but only because I didn’t want to do anything stupid during the loading process. I visited a friend in Tacoma before and she took me on the ferry to visit her parents but I can’t remember where they lived other than it was on a naval base. I was relieved that everything went smoothly. The ferry ride was short but the experience was neat. It was really windy so we stayed out on the upper deck only long enough to take pictures.

Once we arrived in Seattle and started unloading from the ferry my GPS put us back on the interstate and right in the middle of afternoon traffic. It took about 35 minutes for us to get downtown and another 20 minutes to find a decent yet affordable place to park. We stopped at Starbucks first and bought our “city mugs”. They have become a tradition of sorts for me. The first one I bought was while I was deployed to Kuwait for six months back in 2007.

Next we crossed the street to Pike Place Market. It was a lively place with a lot of interesting people. They throw fish around just like you see on TV. There are also lots of vendors selling various things but the fresh cut flowers were spectacular. I would’ve bought some but we were getting on our flight home the very next morning and I didn’t want to deal with any drama going through security. Besides, the amount of crap I was already carrying on the plane was out of control.

By this time it was early evening and we were hungry. We walked a few blocks to a mall to grab something quick to eat. This was a good decision because we were at Westlake Center Mall and the Seattle Monorail departed every 10 minutes to take people to the Space Needle. Jackpot!!! It was $4.50 for a roundtrip fare which I didn’t have one problem paying since the Space Needle was a mile away, I was tired and our car was in a parking space that was already paid for.

The view from the Space Needle was so gorgeous. The sun was starting to set and I was in awe! My daughter is a little scared of heights so I took most of the pictures out on the observation deck. That place was super crowded and folks were starting to get rude. I was running out of patience so we headed downstairs to the gift shop to look around and then got back on the monorail. We finally made it back to our rental car but still had to drive back to the airport. I forgot to mention that while we were downtown Seattle there was an anime convention going on. There were people everywhere dressed up in costumes. It was like Halloween in April. We also kept randomly running into this colorfully dressed man who was NOT part of the anime convention…

I made the rental car reservation so that we could turn in the car the evening before our flight specifically to save money and time. I knew we could take a hotel shuttle to the airport the next morning. However, we didn’t want to drag all of our luggage around while dropping off the car. So we checked into our airport hotel and put the luggage in the room. Kayla stayed at the hotel and we headed to the airport to drop off the car. I think we finally made it back to the hotel around 9:30pm. I was completely wiped out. Thankfully our flight didn’t depart super early so we did get to sleep in until around 7:00am.

The shuttle to the airport was hassle-free and I made the right decision mailing that box from Forks. My suitcase was right at the weight limit. At this point I couldn’t wait to get on the plane, pop a Dramamine and sleep. A week of non-stop traveling really takes its toll but I’d do it all over again if given the opportunity.

It’s been well over a year since our trip and I think about it almost daily. Mostly I think of the Pacific Northwest and how stunning it is. I’m also sad that a return trip is not in our near future. Life is too hectic for us right now with my daughter starting college this fall. But I will go back. There are so many things that I didn’t get to see. I will always want more time there. I think the best part of our trip for me was seeing my daughter’s passion for photography first hand. We went because of Twilight and fell in love with the Pacific Northwest.

While visiting my mother in Georgia I decided to leave my daughter with her adoring Grandparents for a while and head out with my son for a small sightseeing trip to see Robert Pattinson’s Water for Elephants house!  Can’t you just picture Jacob Jankowski on the front porch?

We had the time, the weather was perfect and my camera was a hummin!

It didn’t take long to get to and there was literally no one on the road, except for that SUV that drove up and down the street in front of the house waiting for us to move.  I wasn’t in a rush.  We weren’t trespassing and although the wind was blowing, the weather was nice and my son was having a great time! We tried to ignore the cow that stood by the house for fifteen minutes eyeballing us.

We also stopped by the Tennessee Railroad Museum.  We took a train ride through the Pre Civil War tunnel that is in Water for Elephants.  I took some photos from inside the train so they kinda suck but it was neat to take the ride through the tunnel.  I hope to go back in a couple of months and try for a do-over.
